Word of Mouth Wines (WOM) established in 2003, is an exciting collaboration between two neighbours with existing vineyards on the slopes of Mt Canobolas at a cool 1000 metres above sea level over looking the township of Orange.

The two vineyards share a common boundary, soil types, climate and rainfall. One was established in the early nineties with traditional varieties of Pinot noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Riesling. The other was first planted in 1999 with Pinot Gris and has since added Viognier, giving a total area of 8 hectares under vines, with a further 4-5 hectares to be developed.

Combining the two operations made economic sense, and with the appointment of Lowe Family Wine Company (LFWC) as wine makers, there is a perfect synergy of aged vines, great cool climate location, traditional and new varieties with passionate and innovative wine making.

The Story of our Label

Painting of womans lips by Victor Gordon

Having chosen Word of Mouth as a name for our wines we were lucky to come accross a painting by artist Victor Gordon that suited our idea. There is a synergy between our name and the artwork, we always saw Word of Mouth as like the empty balloon in a cartoon you fill in the space, tell your Word of Mouth story. The painting's title Freudian Slips intimates the unintentional sharing of a secret; The original and seductive artwork parallels the hand crafted production processes of our Word of Mouth wines.

The talents of David Lowe (LFWC) were quickly evident in the first vintage for the new company in 2003. Through 2004 we had made some big changes in the vineyard, which have had a significant impact on wine quality. By 2005 it was clear that our collective ability was with aromatic whites and Pinot noir, with areas planted to Cabernet and Merlot being either replanted or grafted over to more white varieties. 2005 saw our first Gold Medals and Trophy wins after a succession of bronze and Silver awards. The 2005 Sauvignon Blanc was rated 95/100 by James Halliday and finished in the Best of the Best. The 2008 sauvignon Blanc also achieved a 95/100 and was again in the Best of the Best. Coupled with some fine scores for our Riesling 94/100 and Pinot Gris 93/100 we have now achieved a 5 Star rating for our vineyard.
